A Word On The Famous Gamblers
Famous Gamblers
With gambling for real money being such an age old tradition and pastime it is not surprising that there have been some notable gamblers over the years. Some have made astounding wins or losses and others are just very famous people who like to gamble and have won some big amounts of money.
The Earl of Sandwich
One of the earliest famous gamblers is John Montagu, otherwise known as the Earl of Sandwich who lived from 1718 to 1792. He was known as an incessant gambler who would not even take a break from the table to eat something and hence invented the sandwich. The legend is told that he was hungry and ordered one of his footmen to bring him a slice of meat in-between two slices of bread, hence the sandwich. The Earl of Sandwich gave his name to this meal and not the other way around.
The Man who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo
About a century later, a man by the name of Charles Wells managed to break the bank not once but twice at Monte Carlo. In fact there is a famous song by Fred Gilbert that describes him;” The man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo“. Wells was known as a slimy character and con man that conned many of his friends out of their money promising them it was for a high paying sure thing investment. He took their money and traveled to Monte Carlo, the casino of Francois Blanc, the man who added a zero to the Roulette wheel. In Monte Carlo, Wells won an amazing 23 spins out 30 on the Roulette wheel giving him a whopping 1 million francs. On a second visit, he won the same amount in three days. To the day of his death, Wells insisted that he did not use a system and all his wins were pure luck.
Big Winners and Losers
Another of the great gamblers of that time has to be Nick the Greek Dandalos who played many games in Las Vegas with another great gambler Jonny Moss. Nick the Greek was said to have played Poker for 5 consecutive months, only stopping to sleep. At one point he won $500000 in one hand but then went on to lose $2 million. At that point it is told that he turned to Jonny Moss and said:” Mr. Moss, I am afraid I have to let you go”.
